The Club has been holding successful concert nights since 1999. We are keen to provide the opportunity for visiting performers to appear at the Club and are continuing to hold regular concerts during 2013, so if you are a folk performer planning to visit Adelaide and think you/we fit the bill, we'd like to hear from you. Just contact our co-ordinator Peter Thornton and we will see what we can organise! Concerts at the Club are held on Thursday nights, usually around eight per year, depending on our resources. Have a look here if you'd like to see some photos of past performers.

8pm - Thursday 16th May 2013 - Ange Takats (QLD)

*** PLEASE NOTE NEW VENUE FOR CONCERTS ***
Port Noarlunga Bowling Club - River Road Pt Noarlunga SA
(doors open 7pm)

One of the purest voices on the Australian music scene – Ange Takats is able to coat with sugar, crush with sadness and cut through to the soul of a song.

The former foreign correspondent’s second album Arva mixes Americana folk with the sounds of 1930s jazz … think Joni Mitchell meets Billie Holiday with the Andrews Sisters on backing vocals. It was recorded and produced in Gippsland by Australian music institution J. Walker (Machine Translations), whose clients have included Baz Luhrmann, C.W. Stoneking, Paul Kelly, Clare Bowditch, The Boat People, and Sophie Koh.

The Queensland songwriter began her musical career in Bangkok, where she was based as a foreign correspondent. In 2012 she released a travel memoir titled The Buffalo Funeral, which traces her unusual journey from foreign correspondent to folk singer in Asia.

Her worldly adventures and natural gift for storytelling have allowed Ange to develop a unique performance style – weaving lighthearted travel tales between darkly emotive songs. She released her debut album Aniseed Tea in 2009, which was featured as ‘album of the week’ on Radio National and received high praise.
Ange Takats studied journalism at Charles Sturt University before taking a job as a TV news producer for Channel Nine in Sydney. At the age of 22 she flew to Bangkok—leaving the comforts of her hometown to take on a job in the male-dominated, cut-throat international media. She has interviewed Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, attended an elephant wedding, cuddled prison babies and been chased by a tiger in a Thai temple.

It was in Thailand that Ange was able also to pursue her passion for music. She landed a second job in a folk-rock band—drinking sweet Thai whisky and singing hippie songs with some of Bangkok’s finest musicians, who gave her a musical education she’ll never forget.

"Ange Takats has a bell-peal voice that has the DNA of Judy Collins's tonal purity and Joni Mitchell's emotionality" - The Australian

"Ange Takats could easily prove to be Australia’s answer to Britain’s Laura Marling”
The Canberra Times

"Takats has some interesting stories to tell but the hook is that soulful voice she tells them with. There’s real grit and passion there” – Courier Mail

“Her voice contains so many representations of great female singer/songwriters; but, at the same time bringing herself strongly to your attention”
Jim MacQuarrie, Folk Alliance Australia
